Wait for You

I do like new adult books but I thought this one was a little lacking. There wasn't enough sex, it was predictable, and the guy was faar too perfect. A shy, naive, scared 19 year old flees from Texas to attend college on the east coast far away from her family and the reputation she had at high school. Eager to start fresh she wants to blend in and try to be normal. Then she meets Cam and everything is turned upside down. not bad but not great.

It's been a few months since I read a good New Adult romance and this immediately piqued my interest because I love stories about tattoo artists (I really loved the quirky Tattoo Shop Mysteries by Karen E. Olsen!). Author Stephanie Fournet does a wonderful job bringing this heartwarming and gut wrenching romance to life with a wonderful sassy writing style that lends itself well to the two main characters. Wren is a sassy, no-nonsense tattoo artist, whose love for art is showcased by using her skin (and those she tattoos) as canvas. To say she's had a rough childhood is an understatement but as long as she has her Grandma Gigi, best friend, Cherise, and adorable cat Agnes she can get along fine. Until she can't. After a long day in the tattoo shop she collapses and is rushed to the emergency room and has to immediately have life saving surgery.

Dr. Lee Hawthorne finds himself smitten with the beautiful girl covered into tattoos and does his best so that no scars show on her art. He's so smitten that he even drives her to her apartment, helps her up the stairs, and cleans the kitty litter! There's only one problem. He's got a serious girlfriend. He's played his whole life safe but he's finding that it's lacking, is Wren the kind of women that he wants to spend his life with? Can he break past her barriers? Even the the doctor and the tattoo artist couldn't be more different they find they have more in common then meets the eye. Are they willing to fight for each other? Do they even have a chance? Many serious issues like addiction, sexual abuse, pedophilia, and child neglect are discussed. A definite must read for new adult fans, hot but not too steamy (only two major bedroom scenes, basically just the right amount!).

Things I Can't Explain

So I hadn't heard any buzz for this book but I happened across it at my library and was instantly sold when I saw that it was a "Clarissa Explains it All" novel for grown-ups. Like, how cool?!? The creator of the show (he also wrote for Ren and Stimpy, Rugrats, SNL, and National Lampoon) is also the author of the book which I really appreciated. He did a great job of growing Clarissa up and portraying her as an unemployed twenty-something girl in New York City. This book would appeal to 90's girls, fans of "new adult," and even teens. It's not plot heavy, it's very easy to see where the entire book is heading but it doesn't make it any less fun. There are fun drawings, charts, lists, and other elements to entice the reader. A good beach read; mindless but fun and quick.

Real

This was beyond cheesy, it jumped off the deep end, belly-flopping into the unbelievable. Brooke is convinced by her super cool friends to attend an underground boxing match and while there she encounters, Mr. Man Meat, Remington Tate. From the moment he lays eyes on her he knows he has to have her. So he bullies her into giving him her number, stalks her online, discover she's an athletic trainer, and "hires her" for the next three months. There's lots of sexual tension around them and at first Brooke doesn't care, but the more she watches his rippling muscles in action the more she wants him. He's a hot tempered maniac, and she's a former Olympic has been, match made in heaven. There's a couple of steamy hot sex scenes, but most of the book just talks about how wet Brooke's panties get watching Remington. It's over the top, the sex is super unbelievable, and hell so is the whole premise and romance.

Boomerang

I was pleasantly surprised by this book, not because it blew me out of the water, but because it seemed to have heart, something that isn't generally present in new adult romance. It was very reminiscent of Stephanie Perkins young adult romance novels, adorable, quirky, and fun. Plus lots of feel good vibes.

The story opens with two young twenty somethings as they wake up naked in bed, hungover and confused. Realizing that they must have one hell of a night, they sheepishly put on their clothes and head their separate ways. Little do they realize that they are also both of the new interns hired at Boomerang, an online dating company. What are the odds that they would both see each other again, and this time as competitors, not as lovers! There are two internships but only one job opening available afterwards. They have to put their sexual chemistry aside and play ball to see who wants the job most. It's cute, funny, and an enjoyably easy read.

Hopeless

Out of all the new adult I've read so far, this one has dealt with the most"grown up" issues, which is impressive when you realize that this book features two high school students. Socially awkward and technology impaired, Sky, convinces her mom to let her attend her senior yea of high school in an actual school. Homeschooled for her entire life, she wants to see what it's like to be surrounded by her peers.  While there she encounters Holder, this sultry hott bad boy and the two have an instant connection. While getting to know him, Sky realizes that he's holding something back. When she finally finds out what it is her life will be shattered. The simple carefree life she had known is blown to bits and she has to discover if she has what it takes to find out the whole truth and pick up the pieces. Dark at times, but still rewarding. The young couples too good to be true romance though will have you hating every male you've ever known though, because none can possibly compete with the romantic and sexual prowess of Holder. Soo far probably my favorite novel in this genre.

Beautiful Disaster

So I have conflicting feelings about this book. Part of me didn't mind and got swept up in the romance. The other part of me was aghast at the dysfunctional, unhealthy relationship that the two main characters have. It was over the top and some of the sub plots were wholly unbelievable. Regardless, it was a quick absorbing read.

Abby Abernathy (what a name right?) goes away to college with her best friend, America (ugh these names!) excited to reinvent herself and get away from her shady past (when you finally find out, it's.... kinda ridiculous).? America instantly finds a frat boy to hang all over and it's then that Abby is introduced to frat boy's roommate, Travis "Mad Dog" Maddox. Travis is a huge tattooed covered, fist throwing, hot headed, manwhore, and for some reason starts to fall for Abby. He goes from bagging one or two girls a night to spending all his free time with Abby, America, and frat boy. Yay for double dates! Soon people on campus are talking, has Abby tamed Travis? To Travis' chagrin, Abby insists they're just friends (even though they sleep in the same bed, no sex though because Abby is TOTALLY a virgin.. uh huh), and fawns over a frat guy named Parker. Everyone on campus is confused (as was I), is Abby seeing Travis or Parker? Who does she like better? Why are they competing? CHOOSE ALREADY! Sweet Jesus! As if that wasn't getting on my nerves, Travis is a jealous, over protective jerk that borderlines on abusive. It's a wild, unbelievable read that doesn't have all that much sex. It's meh.

The Edge of Never

The first of many new adult romances I plan to read this month. Despite the lack of rampant sex that I was anticipating, I still enjoyed this book. It's an impossibly quick read (and it's over 400 pages!) and the romance seems real and fragile. Camryn fed up with her life, decides to hop on a Greyhound bus going anyway away from her life. Andrew, having to face his father's imminent death, decides to hop on a Greyhound so he can prolong the inevitable and use the time to think before he has to face his father in the hospital. Once their paths cross nothing will ever be the same. Lots of build up for a believable romance. Sex is light and not too erotic. The first sex scene doesn't happen til well over the halfway point. Not too shabby.

An Age of License

As a single twenty something who loves to travel, I LOVED this graphic novel. It was honest, funny, insightful and really spoke to me! This memoir illustrates the author's journey abroad, her attempts at love, her aspirations for the future, and the experiences one gains while traveling. It's all honest and true which makes it that much more enjoyable. I honestly can't remember the last time I enjoyed a graphic novel so much. Also, from a librarian's standpoint, this would definitely fall under the genre of new adult. Even though it's cataloged in our collection as young adult, I would say that it's geared more towards young twenty somethings. Adorable!
