Mrs. Caliban

This book.....  is odd. Not in a bad way. Just. Odd. Satirical, weird, and unique; this story of an unhappy housewife who encounters a seven foot tall lizard man is compelling in a weird way. Mrs. Caliban starts falling for the creature practically instantly. She is so starved for affection that this curious, avocado loving, green, reptilian man practically falls into her bed and starts to take center stage in her life. Her husband doesn't notice, her best friend doesn't notice. It doesn't even seem to matter. She knows she can't keep this up forever though; he wants to go home and everyone in the area is on the lookout for him as he killed his captors when he escaped captivity. Bizarre and intriguing; it's quite short and I read it in an hour. I don't know what to make of it, so let me know if you ever read this one!

Lady Killer

The illustrations in this comic are fabulous! My eyes were glued to the page. It was a fun story line (for great insight read the introduction, you won't regret it!) enhanced by the amazing graphics. Female assassins aren't exactly known for getting their hands dirty. Suffocation and poison are the general favorites, but this comic turns all that around. A doting housewife and mother LOVES killing and loves getting her hands dirty. She'll take any job as long as she's back in time for dinner. Her superior is becoming annoyed that she isn't available at any time (because you know, kids) so he starts to think about cutting her loose, but they may prove to be  very very dangerous idea. Lots of fun! Worth a read!

Beyond Orange County

I'll admit, I have never watched an episode of The Real Housewives... ever, reality TV is not my cup of tea. So I was mildly interested in checking out this book that was written by a "Godly" housewife (seems impossible, at least from what I'd heard about the show). Lydia felt that she was called to be on season 8  of The Real Housewives of Orange County to show women that she could be a positive Christian role model. This book is part memoir, part devotional, part guide to female Christian behavior. It's an insanely fast read (short and large print!) and can be gotten through in several hours. It can also be used as a group discussion guide because there are questions at the end of each chapter. The different spiritual topics she touches on include: dealing with discouragement, family matters, forgiveness, finding peace, self-image and worth, and so much more. It's a memoir mixed with scripture, statistics, how to's, prayers, and more. It's primarily aimed at mothers or wives, but other spiritual women could still gain a thing or two from reading this. It' nothing groundbreaking, but it may reach the hands of some non-spiritual people who will only read this because it was written by a housewife, so it has the potential to seek out new audiences. A good introduction guide to spirituality for those unfamiliar with it or those who have lost the purpose in their faith.
